Downtown Chandler's Morning Now Starts at a Cocktail Lounge

Downtown Chandler goes into November with a dark corner at Arizona Avenue and Boston Street. A few doors away, a cocktail lounge now opens at 8 a.m. with Press Coffee. Across the street, the park has a free event on its calendar almost every week until Thanksgiving. Most of what keeps downtown busy during the day right now comes from the lounge and the park, and the people behind both have published hours and dates you can plan around.

The storefronts that used to anchor that stretch have neither. Below is what changed, what replaced it, and how the next few weeks look for anyone who walks or drives downtown on a regular basis.

The corner that went quiet on Aug. 29

Tipsy Egg, The Uncommon and Recreo Cantina all closed on the same week in late August. Mouth by Southwest first reported that the three had shut abruptly and were expected to reopen that weekend. The next day, the same outlet reported that all three would close permanently at the end of business on Saturday, Aug. 29.

That took out a big part of the downtown core at once. The Uncommon sat on the southeast corner of Arizona Avenue and Boston Street. Tipsy Egg was directly south of it, and Recreo was around the corner on San Marcos Place.

Chris Purcell manages the concepts. He told Mouth by Southwest the closures were "clearing space for new concepts" and that more projects are planned downtown for late 2026 and early 2027. When asked what's coming to the three spaces, he said, "Stay tuned for announcements soon on what is coming next." As of late October, nobody has publicly named a replacement for any of the three.

So the corner has a rough timeframe and nothing else. With no names attached yet, a weekend downtown plan has to start somewhere else.

Coffee at 8 a.m., from a bar

On Oct. 20, SanTan Spirit House, the cocktail lounge from SanTan Brewing, started an all-day coffee program with Press Coffee, Mouth by Southwest reported. The bigger change is the hours. Spirit House now opens at 8 a.m. every day. It closes at midnight Sunday through Thursday and at 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. On weekends, that's a 17-hour day in a space built for evening cocktails.

The menu covers what you'd expect from a coffee bar and then some:

  • Basics: drip, cold brew, lattes and cappuccinos
  • Specialty drinks: Toasted Cabana Boy with toasted coconut and roasted hazelnut, Grounds for Divorce with chocolate and cherry, and Afternoon Delight, a cold brew with maple pancake and salted caramel
  • Pricing: $6.25 for a regular, $7.50 for a big
  • Something other than coffee: Red Bull-infused Charged Refreshers in Cherry Lime, Peach Emoji and Blue Hawaiian
  • Snacks: coffee cake, cinnamon rolls and cookies

You can add a SanTan Distilling spirit to any coffee, onsite only. Spirit House also now serves the full menu from SanTan Brewpub next door. That means a coffee can turn into lunch without moving to another building, and that matters while several nearby kitchens sit empty.

Saturday mornings belong to the park

The Downtown Chandler Farmers Market runs every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Dr. A.J. Chandler Park West, 3 S. Arizona Ave. The Downtown Chandler market page lists dozens of local farmers, gourmet food vendors and artisans. The season runs October through May.

On the first Saturday of every month, the market hosts Kids Day. Chandler Parks & Recreation and Chandler Public Library set up life-size games and hand out free swag starting at 9 a.m. Yoga's Arc also leads a donation-based Yoga in the Park class for all levels and ages. Bring a mat, water and sunscreen, and check the market page for this season's dates before you go.

That puts a few hours of guaranteed activity across the street from the closed storefronts every week, whatever happens with the corner.

Two weekends with firm dates

Over the next two weekends, the park and City Hall have back-to-back events. For anyone reading this Thursday, the first one is tomorrow night.

When What Where Cost
Fri., Oct. 30, 5:30–8:30 p.m. Halloween Spooktacular, with trick-or-treating and costume parades Dr. A.J. Chandler Park Stage Plaza, 178 E. Commonwealth Ave. Free
Sat., Oct. 31, 9 a.m.–1 p.m. Farmers market on Halloween morning Dr. A.J. Chandler Park West, 3 S. Arizona Ave. Not listed
Sat., Nov. 7, 9 a.m. Kids Day at the farmers market Dr. A.J. Chandler Park West Free
Sat., Nov. 7, 10 a.m. Diwali: Festival of Lights Chandler City Hall Courtyard, 175 S. Arizona Ave. Free

The city announced the Halloween Spooktacular in early October as its annual free night of trick-or-treating and costume parades at Stage Plaza.

Nov. 7 is the busiest morning on the downtown calendar this season. Kids Day starts in the park at 9, and an hour later the City of Chandler's Diwali listing has the Festival of Lights starting at 10 a.m. in the City Hall Courtyard, a short walk south on Arizona Avenue. Visit Chandler's fall events page describes Diwali as an evening event, so check the city's page that week before you set the alarm.

Here's one way to spend that Saturday that doesn't depend on a single unconfirmed opening:

  1. Coffee at SanTan Spirit House when it opens at 8.
  2. Kids Day at the farmers market at 9.
  3. Diwali at the City Hall Courtyard at 10.
  4. Lunch off the SanTan Brewpub menu back at Spirit House.

The Thursday night that takes over San Marcos Place

Downtown has evening events too. The Downtown Chandler Community Partnership's Third Thursday Market Series is back for 2026–2027 with eight free themed markets, held from 5 to 9 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month from October through May.

The Oct. 15 kickoff spread across the district. At d'Vine Gourmet, 72 S. San Marcos Pl., guests decorated taper candles with Halloween-themed temporary tattoos, and a free FS8 workout took place on the lawn outside Crust Simply Italian. Next up is Girls' Night Out on Thursday, Nov. 19, followed by a Holiday Market in December.

"The Third Thursday Market Series gives people a reason to come downtown, stay awhile and experience something different each month," Jess Walrath, CEO of Downtown Chandler Community Partnership, said in the partnership's announcement.

For dinner after the market, there's an option one block off the core. Lomas Cocina de México opened this summer inside Padeland, the padel and pickleball venue on the southwest corner of Arizona Avenue and Chandler Boulevard at 1 W. Chandler Blvd. PHOENIX magazine's August roundup describes a full raw bar, tacos, aguachile and a cocktail list heavy on mezcal and tequila.

What's still waiting on a date

Two downtown projects have been announced but don't have opening dates yet.

The first is the three closed spaces at Arizona and Boston and on San Marcos Place. The window is late 2026 into 2027, and no concepts have been named.

The second is Greenwood Brewing. In February, PHOENIX magazine reported that the brewery planned a taproom at 55 N. Arizona Place for "later this year," with no specific date announced. Founder Megan Greenwood told What Now Phoenix that coming back to Chandler, where her brewing career started, "feels incredibly meaningful." In mid-October, Greenwood's own website still listed the Chandler location as "coming soon," with no opening date.

Until those dates are set, downtown's dependable schedule looks like this: Spirit House opening at 8 a.m. every day, the market in the park every Saturday at 9, Spooktacular on Oct. 30, Diwali on Nov. 7, and Girls' Night Out on Nov. 19.
